Newrs | Aga Khan hospital swing into action to save knee patients

Dar es Salaam. The Aga Khan Hospital in collaboration with specialists from Prince Aly Khan Hospital in India today have performed knee and hip replacement surgeries on five patients.
The operations follows the knee and hip replacement screening camp which was conducted at the Aga Khan Hospital on April 29, in which some 149 people were screened and at least 16 people were diagnosed with the complications.
The surgeries have been arranged in phases whereas in the first phase five patients have been operated today and the second phase will accommodate the remaining 11 patients.
Speaking at the press conference, orthopaedic surgeon at Aga Khan Hospital Dr Harry Matoyo, noted that the surgeries were conducted using modern technology, which allows the patient to recover within a short period of time.
He pointed out that lack of expertise and modern technology were critical challenges facing health sector in Tanzania, calling for strengthening of public-private partnership (PPP) in a bid to improve surgical procedures in the country.
“..there is still a lot to be done to address the challenges facing the health sector in the country. We as private entity, we will continue to work closely with the government especially the health ministry in a bid to curb the challenges,” he noted.
